A graduate of the University of Nebraska he was a lifelong alum. Burney served his country honorably with the Navy. Upon his discharge he began a career in education, later serving as the Director of Adult Basic Education for the Nebraska Department of Education until his retirement.
He was a Master Mason of 60 years with Utica Lodge 96 of Nebraska. He shared his love of motorcycles with the Shriners. Burney was an accomplished organist and shared his talent with the church.
After retiring, he moved to Dallas, and became a lover of furry friends and specifically taking care of his best canine friend, Cooper.
He is survived by his family at heart, "brother and sister-in-law", Dennis and Kathryn Hotchkiss and "nieces", Michelle Leacock, Nicole Clark, Kim Horsham and Erin Hotchkiss.
Memorial service will be held at 3:00 Monday, Oct. 10, at Holy Covenant Methodist Church, 1901 East Peters Colony Rd. , Carrollton, TX 75007.
