A resident of Mineola, Wood County, Texas, JOHN CREIGHTON BUCHANAN was born in Greenwood, Louisiana, on February 24, 1850. He moved to Rusk County, Texas, during the same year. Educated in Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas, he commenced the practice of law in Quitman, Wood County in 1873. In 1875 he married Sarah Rosalie "Rosa" Patten. He became the first Wood County Attorney in 1876. In 1878 he was elected as a Democrat, 6th District, to the State Senate representing Rains, Wood, Upshur, Gregg and Smith Counties. He was a strong advocate of education authoring a bill to establish normal schools in Texas. He secured a grant to finance Mineola schools. He was, also, a champion of the bill that created the University of Texas. Buchanan served in the State Senate until his death in 1884 at age 34.
