James Dee Batey was born on August 17, 1885 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the son of William Morgan Batey (1857–1918) and Mary Elizabeth (Brandon) Batey (1849–1927).
He was married to Bessie Annie Fly (1884–1965), and she was the daughter of Ben Franklin Fly (1861–1925) and Abbie (Partee) Fly (860–1917).
Retired from Nashville Chattanooga & Saint Louis Railroad and living at 2601 Blakemore Avenue in Nashville, James was 77 years old and married when someone beat him on the head with a woman's shoe on February 25, 1963, causing a cerebral contusion, and he died on March 9, 1963 at Vanderbilt Hospital.
Survivors included his widow Bessie and his nephew Billy Jakes of Readyville, Tennessee.
Funeral Services were held on March 11th at the chapel of Cosmopolitan Funeral Home, and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville.
