This man, my gg-grandfather, is a mystery. Where did he come from, what is his real name, and did he actually ever kill anyone?

The first hard evidence I have of him is his marriage to Ollie S Lane on Jul 27 1884 in Kaufman Co TX. Ollie is just as much a mystery as her husband. She came from nowhere, married young, died young, and left few footprints. Family lore says that Oscar (a railroad freight conductor) saw Ollie, then about 14, getting off his train, and swore to himself he would marry that pretty little thing. And so he did.

They proceeded to have 4 children. The last child died with Ollie on Dec 18, 1896 and is buried with her.

This may or may not be my Oscar during those mystery years... 1880 census Eddyville, Lyon Co KY
Emil Boyd 64 farmer b.KY/VA/VA
America Boyd 52 b.KY
William Gregory 24 farm laborerb.KY/KY/KY
Oscar S Danels (Daniels) 27 clerk in grociery store b.OH VA VA

In the 1889-1890 Houston TX Directory, Oscar S Daniels is listed at 29 Hardy, freight conductor, Southern Pacific RR. There is also an Oscar H Daniels listed with identical information. There is also a Miss Susie Lane listed in the residence of Oscar S Daniels in 1894-1895. Is this a sister of wife, Ollie S Lane Daniels?

Found on Soundex for Texas 1900, in Harris Co, Houston, at 1603 Terry, 4 years after death of wife Ollie:
Danels, Oscar S w m 43 b.Dec 1856 KY
" Oscar M (Mouthe) son 14 b.Mar 1886 TX
" Luke S (Short) son 12 b.Feb 1888 TX
" Sadie O dau 8 b.Jan 1892 TX

Both sons have odd middle names. Oscar's middle name "Mouthe" was allegedly the surname of the midwife who delivered him. A little quick research does find that surname in TX at the time, but this researcher has not been able to validate the story. Regarding Luke's middle name of "Short", family rumor says Oscar shot a man named Luke Short (L. L. Short), thought he had killed him, and promised to name his next son after him. Luke Short was a fairly famous gunfighter b.1854, who died 1893 of dropsey. Either this story is totally fabricated, Oscar only winged the famous gunslinger and lived to tell the story (how likely is that?), or he actually killed someone else. We may never know the truth, but Luke ended up with a strange middle name over it!

Oscar died a terrible death, being crushed and burned during a train derailment on a trip to Sour Lake TX where an oil boom demanded daily train arrivals. He wasn't found for quite a while, and was burned beyond recognition. He was only identified by the inscription in his pocket watch.

Update 8-5-2010: Just found 2 of the children living in Kansas City MO with their step-mother Mamie. So, sometime between 1896 and 1903, Oscar remarried. After his death, Mamie apparently finished raising the children. There is no evidence of Mamie having any children of her own with Oscar.

My grandmother Mae, Oscar's granddaughter, spent many years researching this man. She believed that he was really Evin D Baker Jr, b.1849 in Castine, Darke Co OH, son of rich and famous Evin D Baker and wife Nellie Jane McGriff Baker. Evin Sr was an attorney, prosecutor, and railroad executive. Grandma Mae, with help from a very aged Clyde Baker, attorney in OH, determined that Evin D Baker Jr got into some big trouble in OH, allegedly (here we go again) killing a man, and that his rich and famous RR daddy sent him to TX with a new identity to escape the law. It makes sense that he might get him a job working in the railroad business where he had so much influence, but as a freight conductor? And Evin was only 14 when his father died, so obviously his rich Daddy could not have facilitated an escape to TX. There is some evidence that perhaps Evin Jr, before he disappeared from the face of the earth, moved to Indiana with older brothers, and married Annie Pratt. Evin Baker and Annie Pratt Baker both disappear off the face of the earth. So perhaps, she is dead, and it is an older brother who helps Evin Jr leave for TX. Or not. :(
