Max G. Abernathy Sr. died March 28, 2016, in Greensboro, N.C. Born Dec. 2, 1929, in Harnett County, N.C., Mr. Abernathy was one of six brothers born to Silas Davis and Elsie Lanier Abernathy. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, then graduated from East Carolina University, where he met his wife of 56 years, Alta Mallard Abernathy, who died in 2014. Mr. Abernathy was the owner-operator of Southern Business Systems and a deacon and elder at Vandalia Presbyterian Church, where he taught the Davis Bible Sunday School class for more than 20 years. Most recently, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Max was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and three brothers, Preston L. Abernathy, J. Lane Abernathy, and Billy R. Abernathy. He is survived by a daughter, Beverly Hering, and son-in-law, G. Clark Hering, IV, and their sons Clayton, Tanner, and Flinn Hering, all of Greensboro; a son, Max (Gar) Abernathy, Jr., and his son Max G. Abernathy, III, of Emerald Isle, N.C.; and brothers S. Howard Abernathy and wife Peggy and Gerald W. Abernathy and wife Yvonne; sister-in-law Carolyn M. Abernathy; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 1, in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro. The family will receive friends afterward in the Virginia Gilmore Room. The family would like to thank Dr. W. Douglas Shaw, Dr Joseph Coladonato, the staff at Abbotswood-Vera Springs, and the nurses and staff at Beacon Place for their compassionate care.
