Hugo Bock joined the Bote & Bock company in 1863, which was founded by his father Gustav Bock. From 1868 he supported his uncle Emil Bock, who was running the company at the time, as a junior manager. During this time he was one of the most important figures in Berlin's musical life. He had personal ties to Anton Rubinstein, Franz Liszt, Peter Tschaikowsky, Max Reger and others. Bock was one of the most active promoters of improved copyright law and a co-founder of GEMA. In 1874 Hugo Bock married Fanny v. Lossow, the couple had six children, including two sons Gustav and Anton Bock.
