Emma "Jean" Allen Halladay returned to her Heavenly Father on October 25, 2021. Jean passed through the veil peacefully in her sleep at home at the age of 95.

Jean was born July 10, 1926, in her beloved city of Hyrum, Utah to Hans Peter and Anna Irene Anderson. To the delight of her children and grandchildren, Jean often shared memories of early life in Hyrum growing up with her ten siblings. These recollections included sledding on Cemetery Hill, building snow forts, cozy sleepovers at her grandmother Hanna's house where she enjoyed her Danish cooking, Easter adventures rolling eggs down Little Sugar Loaf, and sleeping under the branches of the big apple tree in the front yard in the summer. Our favorite story was of the time she and several of her brothers were tasked with planting a field of corn. They decided they would have more time to play if they planted all of the corn in one large hole, which would free-up time to play. Their plot was discovered when a massive mound of corn began to grow in one spot in an otherwise empty field!

After marrying and moving to Maine where she lived for many years and had her six children, Jean returned to Utah in 1966 as a single parent. Despite many obstacles that could have caused a lessor woman to fail, Jean immediately began to build a new life for herself with a fierce determination to provide her children with a stable and secure upbringing. Jean obtained her GED then continued her education to become a barber, which provided the means to purchase a beautiful home for her family in Magna. In 1975, Jean fell in love with St. George during a trip to Southern Utah, and moved her three children remaining at home, Peter, Dawn, and Sylvia, where they settled in Washington.

Jean never wavered from her dedication to living her life in a way that would insure the well-being and happiness of her children. She would not hesitate to work extra jobs in order to provide Sylvia with piano lessons or surprise Dawn with a beautiful dress for a school dance.

She was deeply spiritual and loved her church and the Lord. She lived her life in service to her family and others, particularly the elderly, many of whom benefitted from her delicious cooking when she made her Sunday deliveries, her monthly visits to local nursing homes giving free haircuts or cleaning the homes of those who could not do so themselves. Jean met and married her husband Carl Halladay in 1981 and they were sealed for time and eternity in the St. George LDS Temple. They were proud to have served in the Africa West Ghana Mission. She felt great joy from her many years working in the St. George LDS Temple

Jean had many talents, and loved to cook, play piano, paint, write music (a song for each grandchild!), and wrote short-stories and poetry. Her energy was boundless, and she loved to entertain, making every event she was involved in a joyous celebration.

When grandchildren began to arrive, Jean became "Grammie" or "Tullah", depending on which grandchild was addressing her, and was a selfless, dedicated, helpful and fun-loving grandmother to her many grandchildren, all of whom love her beyond measure.

Jean was able to live-out the final years of her life in the comfort of her home due to the dedicated and selfless caregiving provided by her daughter Lana, to whom the family is most grateful.

Jean is survived by her sister, Carma Tolman; brother, Harold Anderson; daughter, Lana Lorenzen of St. George; son, Peter Allen of Salt Lake City; daughter, Dawn (Larry) Stites of Tracy, California; and daughter Sylvia (Greg) Bartholomew of St. George, Utah; as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom love her tremendously and will always carry her memory in their hearts. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; and sons, Dennis and Jan.

In her final years, Jean spoke often of those loved ones who had passed before her, and of her longing for the mountains and meadows of her childhood home, where she will make her final journey for burial beside her husband Carl in the place where her life began, her beloved Hyrum.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 29, 2021, at 12:00 p.m. with a visitation prior at 11:00 a.m., at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah.

Graveside services will be held Monday, November 1, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hyrum City Cemetery, 550 East Main Street, Hyrum, Utah.
