Nancy Jane (Talburt) Hargrave was the daughter of Frederick Benton Talburt Sr. and Elizabeth Wilhoit. She was born in 1797 in Greene County, Tennessee. When she was about 9, her family relocated to Union County, Illinois, where she later married John Robert Hargrave Jr. on December 25, 1817. To this union were born:

About 1822, Nancy and John relocated their family to an area of Arkansas that would become Marion County and then Baxter County, where their parents and siblings had previously settled. Robert Baker Hargrave was the first of their children born in Arkansas, in 1823. The 1850 Census shows the family still living in Marion County, Arkansas, and the 1860 Census shows them in Whiteville in that same county. Nancy died in Mountain Home in that same area at the age of 82.
