Lieutenant Atkinson served in the 3rd Virginia Cavalry (3rd Infantry, 13th Virginia Cavalry, 10th Virginia Cavalry, Chew's Battery of Horse Artillery). He was attending William & Mary College when the war began & served as cadet drillmaster until he joined the 3rd Virginia Cavalry as a private. He participated in the 7 Days War, Gettysburg until the end of the war. He set up a medical practice in St. Louis after the Civil War & often refused payment for services he performed for the needy.
