5th Earl of Ormond and 1st Earl of Wiltshire. Eldest son of James Butler, 4th Earl of Ormond, and his first wife, Joan de Beauchamp, Countess of Ormond. Married, first, Avice Stafford; second, Lady Eleanor Beaufort. Achieved knighthood, 1426. Fought in the Hundred Years War, 1435-41. Served as Sheriff of Cardiganshire, 1442-61, and as Sheriff of Carmarthenshire, 1442-61. Created 1st Earl of Wiltshire on 8 July 1449. Succeeded his father as the 5th Earl of Ormond, 22 August 1452. Privy Counsellor, 1453. Held the office of Justice of the Peace; Treasurer of England, March 1454/5. Appointed Knight, Order of the Garter, 1459. Served as Lieutenant of Ireland, 1459-61, and Governor of Ireland in 1461. Fought for the Lancastrians in the First Battle of St. Albans, 1455. Fought for the Lancastrians in the first Battle of St. Albans, 1455; Battle of Wakefield, 1460; Battle of Mortimer's Cross, in February 1460/1; Battle of Towton, March 1460/6.
