Death of Silas I. Hampton

Silas I. Hampton died Friday, the 14th inst., at his home on Howell mountain. Mr. Hampton had been in poor health for several years and for a month or so had been failing rapidly. Friday afternoon he was sitting in his chair and his sister thinking he was asleep did not disturb him but went about her household duties. Later she went into the room and noticing her brother in the same position spoke to him and found that he had passed away.

Deceased was a native of Tennessee and was born February 28, 1853. He came to California in 1878 and settled near Napa. In 1884 he located on Howell mountain where he engaged in horticulture. He never married and his sister Miss Elizabeth Hampton made her home with him.

Deceased is survived by the following brothers and sisters: John Hampton, of Indiana; Mrs. Lydia Bales and Eliza Hampton of Yountville; Elizabeth Hampton, of Howell mountain; David F. Hampton, of Alexander valley; and Mrs. Mary Cleghorn.

The funeral took place Monday, Rev. James Mitchell officiating. Interment was made in the Duvall cemetery in Pope valley.
