As a child, Hoy grew up and attended school in the Four Corners area. He served his country proudly during World War II, enlisting in the United States Army on November 14, 1942. During his enlistment, he spent time in Naples, Southern France, Rhineland, and Rome. As a Guard Patrolman, he received the World War II Victory Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal, EAME Theater Ribbon, and 4 Bronze Service Stars. As a Military Police Officer, Hoy served under General Patton. Hoy made General Patton stop at a security checkpoint and checked him thoroughly. General Patton really admired Hoy for this and chose to salute him. On December 16, 1945, Hoy received his honorable discharge.
On April 10, 1946, Hoy married the love of his life, Nancy Riley. Together, they had 7 children: Lucille, Luree, Eva, Gene, Joe, David, and Danny, all of whom still live in the Four Corners area. Nancy preceded her husband in death on June 27, 1996. The couple had been married for over 50 years.
Hoy was well known in the area as a cattleman, dairyman, land baron, trader, and hunter, having sold many pieces of fur when he was younger. He loved to hunt deer and tree coons. He spent many days going to the sale barn or trading dogs. In his later years, he enjoyed taking evening drives with his wife as they surveyed their family land as well as their many head of cattle.
Hoy treasured family time as he loved each member of his family dearly. He loved their many dinners and get togethers over the years. He thoroughly enjoyed seeing his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. His joy and zeal for his family, along with his strong will to live, gave Hoy many blessed years on this earth. He always shared how blessed he was with the family he had. He will be missed.
