Civil War Union Army Soldier. He served during the Civil War as a Private in Company D, 19th Maine Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded in the leg on July 2, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg, and had to have the leg amputated. he died of complications on August 25, 1863 at the Letterman US Army Hospital in Gettysburg.

He is interred with his fallen comrades from Maine in the Gettysburg National Cemetery. His family erected a cenotaph to him in their family plot in the Morrill Village Cemetery, Morrill, Waldo County, Maine.
