US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Michigan's 7th (1977 to 1993), 9th (1993 to 2003) and 5th (2003 to 2013) Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives. He attended St. Mary's High School in Michigan before received his Bachelor of Arts from Sacred Hearts Seminary and went on to received his Teaching degree from the University of Detroit. He began his political career when he was elected to and served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1965 until 1975. He served in the Michigan State Senate from 1975 until 1976, prior to succeeding Donald Riegle in the US House of Representatives. During his tenure, he served on the Committee on Natural Resources and the Committee on Education and Labor. Additionally, he was a proponent for Native-American causes. His thirty-six years in the United States House of Representatives gives him the distinction as being one of the longest serving congressmen in US history.
