*[Abt. Jacob "Jake" Hefner, father of Obeb Franklin Hefner]
"I received the following information from my aunt Maureen Hefner Keller and uncle George M. Hefner, both siblings to my maternal grandfather Fred O. Hefner. This Jacob Hefner is the first of two unrelated Jacob Hefners that Mary Pope married, and is the father of Obed Franklin Hefner, who I am descended from. This first Jacob Hefner left the family (year unknown) and was never heard from again. A family rumor exists that Jacob Hefner drowned in Mississippi. His motive for leaving, honorable or otherwise, is not clear. Mary Pope later married the second Jacob Hefner. My Mother, Lucy Irene Hefner contributed to this information. Aunt Maureen gave me most of the story on or about 11 Sep 1986. Uncle George corroborated soon after. Submitted by Jerry Stephen Jones II, 26 Jun 2011.
This may be further corroborated by the NC marriage records (see hints) that show Mary Ann Pope marrying Jacob A. Hefner in Catawba County NC in 1886. Obed Hefner, Mary's son, was born 1875, so that had to be to the first Jacob Hefner."
