George Oscar Garner, Sr., age 83 of the Crusoe Island community of Whiteville passed on Monday, December 11, 2017 at Columbus Regional Healthcare System in Whiteville. A memorial service will be held at a later date. He was a veteran serving his country honorable in the United States Army during the Korean War. Mr. Garner was employed by Georgia Pacific in the chip & saw department for 22 years until his retirement. He was the son of the late Creta Goodman Garner and Marion Leslie Garner. He was also preceded in death by four siblings, Robert Garner, Leslie "Tommy" Garner, Ernest Garner and William Lloyd "Butch" Garner. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Alene Spivey Garner of the home; five children, George Oscar Garner, Jr., George Allen Garner, Johnnie Alton Garner and Michael Edward Garner all of Whiteville and Cereta Jane Bala of Supply; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn is serving the family.
