A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta.
Bobbie (Bridgeman) Fitzpatrick, known as "Bobbie Jean" to her immediate family members, resided at 2373 Atoka Dr., Marietta, GA 30060 for close to 40 years. Bobbie was 84 and is believed to have died from natural causes. She was the youngest daughter of Webb and Pearle Bridgeman of Taylors, SC and is preceded in death by her 4 older brothers, Sherman, Hilliard, H. Buford, and Roy. By the age of 12, Bobbie was orphaned, sent to live between 2 of her brother's homes, Sherman and Buford, for a short period of time. She was then taken to boarding school where she worked in the laundry for her room and board. During her high school years, she lived and worked as a lifeguard at the YWCA. Even though these early years were very difficult for her and she suffered many hardships, she embraced forgiveness and grace to maintain her relationships with her family. Later, she attended Greenville college where she played collegiate basketball and was President of her class. After finishing college, Bobbie moved to Atlanta with her favorite brother Roy and worked for the government under Senator Herman Talmadge. During this time, she married Alvin Leigh Fitzpatrick, a navy man, and followed him to Japan. There she was able to adopt her daughter with a reference from the senator. Kyoko's name was changed to Leslie Jean, and she brought her back to the United States as a Fitzpatrick. Bobbie and Alvin had 3 more sons, Sean Leigh, Michael David, and Dennis Charles. The family then settled back in Georgia near her husband's family home.
In her professional life, Bobbie returned to work as an accountant for many years with a company that is now Verizon. In addition to working and taking care of a family, Bobbie participated in her local garden club, played Bridge, enjoyed collecting antiques, craft projects, and volunteered for many charity and community projects. During this time, her husband passed away in 1981 from ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. After suffering from a heart attack, herself, Bobbie was forced into retirement. She is also a survivor of breast cancer and a mastectomy, several more heart attacks, along with many other surgeries. Each time she recovered, remained independent, and showed her fighting spirit. Most recently, she was treated for metastasized breast cancer in her lungs and just received word from her doctors last week that the radiation treatments had put the cancer in remission. Her optimism from the news had her planning to enjoy the Spring in her freshly landscaped backyard and she intended this week to adopt a dog.
Survivors include daughter, Leslie Jean Fitzpatrick Campbell and her husband Anthony; sons Sean Leigh and his deceased wife Tammy, Michael David and his wife Kimberly, Dennis Charles and his wife Suzie; seven grandchildren, spouses and significant others; three step-grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Alvin Leigh Fitzpatrick.
Contributions can be made in loving memory of Bobbie to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
