William came to America with his mother Jennety Broom Hill. He came across the plains in the party that included his mother and new stepfather Moses Vince when he was fourteen. On February 15, 1857 he married Emma Maria Mecham . On August 31, 1859 he married a second wife, Mary Jane Price. He had thirteen children with Emma and seven children with Mary. The families moved to Mesa, Arizona in 1881 where William died of smallpox on September 22, 1883. Emma died August 6, 1923. Mary Jane Price Hill died May 1, 1914.
