He enlisted in the Coast Guard on 21 August 1946 and was discharged 22 August 1949.
He married Eleanor Rawson Pfeifer in Franklin County, Ohio on 30 December 1950; they had three children.
By 1992 he was living in Orlando, Orange County, Florida, which was his last address.
