Emma Smith Tanner Swarthout married Nathan at Sycamore Grove near San Bernardino

Mrs. Emma Swarthout, age 81, residing in North G street, for sixty-six years a resident of this city, died yesterday afternoon. She was the widow of Nathan Swarthout, who with his brother, John Swarthout, were among the most prominent of the early settlers. They preceded the main parties into San Bernardino valley. Mrs. Swarthout, then Miss Emma Tanner, came here in 1851. She was born in Ohio. Mrs. Swarthought is survived by five sons, Sidney, Monroe, Harley, Irwin and Alvie Swarthout. She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Charles Tyler of Highland and Mrs. Lydia Davidson of Colton. The interment is to be in the family plot in Pioneer cemetery. The Mark B. Shaw company will have charge of the funeral.
