Margaret A. (Kelly) Rose Hays

Daughter of Melinda Kelly; Wife of James Hays.

In 1850, thirty-six year old Melinda Kelly was living in New Winchester, Hendricks County, Indiana. She had 2 sons, Anthony and William, and 2 daughters, Margaret, age 13, and Mary, age 11.

In 1870, Margaret and James were living in New Winchester. The census record listed 4 children: Alice, age 14; Anna, age 11; William, age 10; and Frank, age 9 months.

However, there is no record in 1860 for this family. Nor is there any marriage record between a Margaret and James Hays that would have occurred prior to the birth of Alice, Anna and William. It is probable that Margaret and James were both widowed and married before the birth of Frank.

There is a marriage record for James Hays to Margaret A. Rose on September 25, 1866 in Putnam County, Indiana. There are also marriage records for James Hays to Mary Kelley on March 24, 1858 in Hendricks County, Indiana and Margaret A. Kelly to Lewis M. Rose on February 22, 1855. It is probable that Margaret and and Mary Kelly were sisters.

In 1860, in Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana, there was a woman named Margaret Rose, age 23, married to Louis M. Rose, who had two children, William, age 3, and Sarah, age 2. There is the discrepancy between the ages and why there is a Sarah and no Alice, but it does appear to be the same family.

Also in 1860, a man recorded in the New Winchester area census records as James Hayse, age 26, had a 20 year-old wife named Mary and a 1 year-old daughter named Anne.

In 1880, Margaret and James were still in New Winchester with 2 children, Frank, age 10, and Frederic, age 5, still at home. A 20 year-old, William M. Rose, indicated as stepson to James was also living with them.

In 1900, Margaret and James were still in New Winchester. Only Fred was living at home. The record indicated they had been married for 34 years making the 1866 marriage date correct. It also showed she had 5 children of whom 4 were living.

In 1910, Margaret and James were still in New Winchester. This record shows them having been married only 40 years and only 2 children. The children number would make sense if James answered the question as they only had 2 together. The census taker did make an annotation that this was their second marriage.
