Funeral for F.L. "Leon" Dawson, 83, of Hartselle will be Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, at 10 a.m. at East Highland Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter Blackmon and the Rev. Junior Hill officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. The body will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Burningtree Memorial Gardens Cemetery with U.S. Navy Honors. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 9 at the church.
Mr. Dawson, who died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007, at Huntsville Hospital, was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Arkansas to J. Fuller Dawson and Gertrude Key Dawson. He was a member of East Highland Baptist Church, served for 50 years in pastoral ministry and was the guidance counselor at Danville High School for over 20 years. He was an active member of the Morgan County Baptist Association and the Campers on Missions. He volunteered for a number of Christian organizations including The Caring Place. He served two terms in the U.S. Navy. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and greatgrandfather and was respected by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Sammie Shippey, Glendene Elliott and Mildred Cagle.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Weinman Dawson; one son, Dennis Dawson and his wife, Teresa, of Decatur; one daughter, Wanda Dawson Thompson and her husband, Glenn, of Hartselle; six grandchildren, Peter Dawson and his wife, Dawn, Matthew Dawson, Beth Anne Dawson, Lea Poole and her husband, Steven, Ashley Thompson and Cline Thompson; and three great-grandchildren, Chandler Dawson, Bradley Poole and Aiden Poole.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Dawson, Peter Dawson, Cline Thompson, Roy Cagle, Donnell Brown and Gordon Cagle.
Honorary pallbearers will be Austelle Bowling, Vester Bennefield and Usery Harris.
The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Gideons, The Caring Place or to East Highland Baptist Church.
