James Samuel Guffey, 73, RR 2, Telegraph Road, Pecatonica, died at 9:58 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 1974, in Freeport Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Born May 15, 1901 in Albany, Ky., son of Mr. and Mrs. Dolph Guffey. Lived 17 years in the Pecatonica area, coming here from Rockton. Married to the former Evelyn Harms in Belvidere, April 21, 1947. Employed as a shop foreman at Rockford Drop Forge Co., for 23 years. In 1959, Mr. Guffey went into farming. Member of the Winnebago County Farm Bureau. Attended schools in Kentucky. Survivors include his widow, Evelyn; two sons, James and Gary, both of Pecatonica; a daughter, Nancy, at home; a brother, Walter Lee Guffey, Rockford; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Kammerer, Rockford; Mrs. Hattie Schemel, Leaf River, and Mrs. Porter (Zelma) Morgan, Rockton. He was preceded in death by his parents; twin daughters; and six brothers and sisters.
Services at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Kenneth L. Coutryman Funeral Home, 529 Washington St., Pecatonica, with the Rev. Dennis Samuelson, retired pastor of Lovejoy Covenant Church, Rockford, officiating. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery.
