Thomas Grantham was born in North Carolina in 1790 and moved to South Carolina, marrying Lydia Alice Woodberry (1795-1860) around 1812. There, they had several children before moving to Mississippi by 1819, where they farmed and had other children. (They had a total of twelve children, ten of them males.)

By 1850, Thomas and Lydia had a farm in Carroll Co., Miss., with only one of their sons still living with them, along with Thomas's mother, Elizabeth. There, they had 20 improved acres and 60 unimproved. By 1860, in what was then part of Choctaw Co., Thomas and "Liddia" lived with no other family members. Lydia died that year, at age 65, and Thomas died there in 1863, at age 73.
