Female Infant, traveled with her widowed mother, Mary Ann Virgin, with the Horton D. Haight Wagon Company of LDS Church members, (1862). Her father, George Thompson Virgin, had died in England the previous December. They departed Florence Nebraska on 10 August 1862. She died along the Mormon Trail, just west of the boundary of Wyoming Territory and in Utah Territory. Her burial was recorded in the Trail Journal of that Wagon Company.

The report described the event: Ephraim Barton, just a young man, took care of the baby, Mercy Ann, carrying her in his arms almost continuously. The bad weather and extreme exposure proved too much for the little one, and she died 6 October 1862. Young Ephriam died the same night.

Mary Ann was so sick that she did not realize that her baby had passed away. A hymn was sung and a prayer offered. Ephraim Barton and the baby were placed in a blanket and buried together in a crude grave. He had died with the baby in his arms. A fire was lighted over the grave to keep animals away and their grave was covered with rocks. This was near the Utah Wyoming boarder and the company moved on.
