Jean was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 31, 1926, a daughter of the late Arthur Wesley Williams and Charlotte Elizabeth Ebeling.
She was raised in Austin, where she attended Austin High School and the University of Texas at Austin. She graduated with a degree in English and a minor in Art. Jean has been a captivating and talented participant in the lively Central Texas arts and literary scene since the 1950s. She came of age as an artist alongside friends and colleagues like Kelly Fearing, Michael Frary, Bill Hoey, Robert Benton, Franklin Gilliam, and Bill Brammer. She has worked as an artist, art teacher, journalist, writer, and editor; both in Austin and while living away in the Virgin Islands and in Mexico. She is a former Director of Laguna Gloria Art Museum, where she started the Museum's art school for children. She also taught art classes at Saint Stephens in Austin. As a journalist, she was the Associate Editor of Austin Homes and Gardens magazine, where she had a long association with over two hundred of her articles published there and in other Texas magazines, such as Texas Monthly. Jean had a big heart and was a dedicated mother to her two children, Emilie and Ted. She also loved to entertain and always surrounded herself with a wonderful group of diverse and interesting friends. If you were friends with Jean, you can be sure that there was something very special about you.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Emilie Barac; her son, Theodore "Ted" Barac; her daughter-in-law, Tava Wilson-Barac and her grandson Wilson Barac.
Services will be held 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at Saint David's Episcopal Church, 301 E. 8th Street, Austin with a reception to follow.
