According to the 1901 and 1911 censuses, Frederick Bender emigrated from Germany to Canada West (now Ontario) in 1854. If this year is accurate, fifteen-year-old Frederick arrived before his parents and two siblings, who sailed from Le Havre to New York in late 1855.

Frederick married Margaret Huehn on September 6, 1864, in Woolwich Township. The couple farmed in northern Woolwich Township. They had thirteen known children:
- Magdalena (1866-1928)
- Anna (1868-1871)
- Solomon (1870-1955)
- George (1872-1955)
- Margaret (1874-1968)
- Mary Ann (1876-1952)
- Susannah (1878-1957)
- Jacob (1880-1952)
- Moses (1882-1882)
- Edwin (1883-1971)
- Henry (1884-1886)
- Ezra (1887-1900)
- Melvina (1890-1974)

Almost six months after his wife's death, Frederick Bender died in Woolwich Township at the age of 75 years.
