FREDERICK ALTMIRE OBITUARY
Frederick E. Altmire, 72, of Apollo died Saturday, April 9, 2005, at the Alle-Kiski Medical Center, Natrona Heights. Born Dec. 13, 1932 in Truxall, he lived in the Kiski Valley all of his life. Before retiring in 1982, he was a partner and owner and operator of Altmire Bros. Coal Co., North Apollo. For 14 years, he was an Apollo-Ridge School District school board member, serving when the Apollo-Ridge High School was built. A life member of the Apollo Elks, he was a 50 year member of Boiling Springs Presbyterian Church. Mr. Altmire drove stock cars in the 1950s and owned and raced harness horses from 1979-1990. He enjoyed playing cards and billiards, and golfing and bowling. His greatest joy was spending time with his family at home, at the beach and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He was a loving husband, dedicated father and grandfather and was a hero to his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Lou Kunkle Altmire; sons, Michael "Mick" Altmire of Spring Church, Robert D. (Kim) Altmire of Apollo and Jeffrey J. Altmire of Creighton; daughters Jacalyn A. (Don) Holland of Yorktown, Va., and Lori R. Altmire and her life partner, Charlene Spelock of Apollo; grandchildren, Kara and Derek Holland, Caleb, Kelcy, Annie, Ethan, Molly and Jeffrey Jr. Altmire; three stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-granddaughter; brothers Robert "Tup" (Wendy) Altmire of Mantun, Ohio, and William (Carol) Altmire of Colorado Springs; and sister Sandra (George) Castro of Glendale, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eli J. and Hazel Glover Altmire; granddaughter Mackenzie Laura Altmire; brother Richard Altmire; and nephew Joseph Castro.Visitation will be private. A memorial service for family and close friends will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2005, in Boiling Springs Presbyterian Church, Spring Church, with the Rev. Terri Swails officiating. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Apollo Meals-on-Wheels or Apollo Food Bank.
