Wilfried "Willie" Woenkhaus, 88, of Fort Wayne, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2021 at Heritage Park Assisted Living, Fort Wayne. Born in Minden, Germany, he was the son of the late Wilhelm and Wilhelmine (nee. Roemke) Woenkhaus.
Wilfried spent his childhood in Radevormwald (Milspe), Germany and immigrated to the USA when he was 18 years old. Willie served in the US Army, he worked for Parrots Packing company for 28 years, and he retired from the City of New Haven after 19 years of service. Willie was a 25-year member of the Fort Wayne Sports Club. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, New Haven. He married Margaret Ellen Ray in June of 1959 and they celebrated 53 years together before her death in 2012. Willie enjoyed decades of summers at Big Long Lake boating, fishing, swimming, and enjoying spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed.
Wilfried is survived by his sons, Richard (Angie) Woenkhaus of Fort Wayne and David (Lisa)Woenkhaus of Warren; grandchildren, Amanda (Mike) Leverton, Amy Woenkhaus Preston, Alex Woenkhaus, Brandon (Fiancée Olivia Gerardot) Woenkhaus, and Trevor Woenkhaus; and great grandchildren, Lena Leverton, Rose Leverton, Madeline Pinkham, Lydia Preston, Aleigha Preston, Zoey Woenkhaus.
Funeral service is 11:30 am Saturday, October 2, 2021 at Harper's Community Funeral Home, 740 St. Rd. 930 E., New Haven with visitation prior from 10-11:30 prior to service. Burial is in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne.
