Major Donald J Madden, Sr., USAF, Retired, 88, of Quinlan, Texas, passed away after his brave battle with kidney cancer on September 3, 2021, at his residence surrounded by his loved ones.

Don was born on September 16, 1932, in Hugoton, Kansas to the late Schuyler and Lola (Mayes) Madden. During the Depression and Dust Bowl, his family moved to Colorado, living in Walsh, Olathe, and Uravan before settling in Montrose. Don was fascinated with flying and planes his entire life and earned his pilot's license at 16 years old. He joined the Air Force near the end of the Korean War and his career was intertwined with significant moments in history. He was on the tarmac armed with nuclear weapons during the Cuban Missile Crisis; he served in the Vietnam War where he was a charter member of Wild Weasels I; and he served at Strategic Air Command (SAC) Headquarters during the Cold War where he flew reconnaissance missions gathering intelligence regarding the USSR. Throughout his service, he was stationed around the world as the Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO) in B-52s, F-100Fs, and F-105s. Don married his late wife, Patsy Jameson, on April 11, 1964, in El Paso, Texas. He and Pat started their family quickly and internationally, having Sue in El Paso; Don, Jr. in Plattsburg, NY; and Kathy in Wiesbaden, Germany. After retiring from the Air Force, he attended Randall Mill School of Personal Evangelism in Arlington, Texas (now known as North Davis). Following his work with the Port Huron Church of Christ in Michigan for four years, he and his family returned to Texas to work with the Quinlan Church of Christ. Don enjoyed playing tennis, attending air shows, having Bible studies, and working on cars and anything else mechanical. Don had a very caring heart and was known to help anyone with whatever need they had. Don was a member of the Quinlan Church of Christ. He served as an elder and deacon at various congregations throughout his life.

Don is survived by his son, Don Madden Jr. and wife Jodi of Commerce; daughters, Sue Hatchel of Quinlan and Kathy Holland of Lubbock; grandchildren, Ben Hatchel, Rachel Lefever (David), Stephen Hatchel, Schuyler Holland, Zach Madden, Grace Bailey, and Jackson Petty; great-grandchildren, Felicity Lefever and Elvis Hatchel; brother-in-law, Merv Johnson; sister-in-law, Lynn Jameson; five nephews, four nieces; numerous cousins; and his special and loving friend, Ann Reagan.

Don is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 48 years, Pat; sister, Ruth Johnson; granddaughter, Angel Holland; brother-in-law, Bill "Jimmy" Jameson; and sister-in-laws, Nancy Mimeau and Rosemary Miracle.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 16, 2021, at 12 p.m. at Quinlan Church of Christ. Family will be accepting guests for visitation at 11 a.m. Don will be laid to rest on Friday, September 17, 2021, at 11 a.m. at DFW National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camden Church of Christ (1285 US 70 Bypass, Camden, TN 38320), for the Ford-Madden Christian School fund in Liberia, Africa.
