He attended ORC and appointed, 2nd Lieutenant, Field Artillery, December 15, 1917, and promoted, 1st lieutenant, September 5, 1918. He was assigned to the 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Division, Camp Shelby, MS.

The 76th Field Artillery shipped out for France on April 29, 1917. After additional training in France the regiment entered the Line on the 5-6 July 1918. He saw heavy combat till the end and awarded the Croix de Guerre.

He returned to the States, April 2, 1919, and discharged from the service, September 15, 1919, as a 1st Lieutenant.

Post-World War, enlisted as a private in Troop A, 51st Machine Gun Squadron (Squadron A), NYNG, October 31, 1922, at the Madison Avenue Armory, New York City. he served in the ranks and discharged in 1925.

He served in the 51st Machine Gun Squadron (Squadron A) with his brothers, Edmund B. Bellinger and Rene Duchamp Bellinger. His uncle Frederick Rene Coudert, Jr (long time member of Squadron A) commanded Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry (Squadron A) during the Puerto Rico campaign, Spanish-American War.
