Jerry was a 1960 graduate of East Carolina University, where he played baseball and football. After graduation, he began his career as an educator and coach. He taught the first class at Ashbrook High School when it opened in 1970, and went on to coach the 1974 NC State Championship football team. He served for over 40 years as an educator and coach of football and baseball, positively influencing many young people. He was inducted into the Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. He was a lifelong, active member of Lutheran Chapel Church where he taught adult Sunday school and served on Church Council. He loved his wife, his sons, grandchildren, the beach and golf.
Survivors of Jerry include his devoted wife of 65 years, Shirley Williams Carpenter; son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Emily Richardson Carpenter; daughter-in-law, Donna Gibson Carpenter, all of Gastonia; grandchildren, Stephen, Lauren, and Elizabeth Carpenter, Drew and Ben Carpenter; nieces and nephews;
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Larry Dean Carpenter, and his brothers, G.W. and Jimmy Carpenter.
The family will receive friends from 12:00pm to 1:00pm, Saturday, September 25, 2021 under the Pavilion of Lutheran Chapel Church. A funeral service will follow at 1:00pm in the church sanctuary with Pastor Michael Comer officiating. Masks are required. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.
