MABEL HOLLAND WRIGHT (Age 102)
Mabel Holland Wright departed this life on September 30, 2010. She was born in Bogue Sound, North Carolina in 1908 and moved to Washington, D.C. after marrying in 1939. She graduated from Women''s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1930 majoring in English. Following college, she taught school and sold ads for WBIG radio station in Greensboro, North Carolina. She returned to teaching in 1955 and taught at Longfellow School for Boys in Bethesda, MD and then at Burning Tree elementary school from 1957 to 1977. During this time she received her Master''s Degree in Education from American University. She taught Sunday school throughout her adult life at her beloved church of 70 years - Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church in downtown Washington, D. C. Mabel was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Broadus Bryan Wright, Sr. Survivors include her four children and their spouses, B. Bryan Wright, Jr. and Marketta, Ola Rinda Wilson and Larry, Kathleen Treiber and Randy and Holland Wright. Mabel is also survived by her seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, beloved relatives and friends. She received many honors including serving as the first woman Chair of the Administrative Board of Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church in 1984. She was also selected the Washington, D.C. Mother of the Year in 1989. She was the cover "girl" of the Iona Senior Services magazine in 2008, taking exercise classes until she was over 101 years old. Mabel was grateful to spend her final years in her own home of 60 years in the city she loved- Washington, D.C. She was lovingly cared for by family members who lived with her so she could do so. The family will receive friends at the Jefferson Funeral Chapel, in Alexandria, VA from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, October 3. Funeral services will be held at Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 4. Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church, 900 Massachusetts Ave., Washington, D.C. 20001.The family will receive friends at the Jefferson Funeral Chapel, in Alexandria, VA from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, October 3. Funeral services will be held at Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 4.
