He spent his childhood living with his uncle J D Nettleton on a farm after his parents died, after this he was engaged in trade. He was a popular bass singer. In 1859, he went to Boston Mass, where he joined the police department in 1861. In 1868, he became the superintendent of the City Prison, and in 1874 was a city constable. He died at age 55 in Lancaster NH shortly after his 2nd marriage.
