Eliza Courtney was born the illegitimate daughter of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey and Lady Georgiana Spencer on 20 February 1792 at Aix-en-Provence. The otherwise wed Duchess was forced by her husband to relinquish Eliza shortly after her birth, to be raised by her paternal grandparents, Charles Grey, 1st Earl Grey, and Countess Grey. The Duchess would visit Eliza in secret, who later named her firstborn daughter for her mother, Georgiana.

Eliza married General Robert Ellice, son of Alexander Ellice, on 10 December 1814 at Scarborough, Yorkshire, England. (The Earl of Grey's sister, Hannah Althea, was wed to Robert's brother, Edward "The Bear" Ellice MP.)
