Clyde V. Riggs, 88, of Elm Creek died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Elm Creek with the Rev. Tom Swartley officiating. Burial will be at Elm Creek Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at O'Brien-Straatmann Chapel in Elm Creek and one hour before services Wednesday at the church.
O'Brien-Straatmann Funeral Home of Kearney and Elm Creek is in charge of arrangements.
He was born July 22, 1920, in Burden, Kan., to Oscar and Bessie (Fell) Riggs.
On May 18, 1947, he married Maude Jones in Winfield, Kan.
Survivors include his wife; son, Clyde "Bill" Riggs of Elm Creek; daughter, Kathryn Tropp and her husband, Ernie, of Loomis; grandchildren, Clayton Tropp and his wife, Kira, of Grand Island, Gayle Tropp of Sidneyand April Riggs of
Elm Creek; great-grandsons, Holden and Hunter Tropp of Grand Island; brother, Robert Riggs and his wife, Mozel, of Mesa, Ariz.; sisters, Helen Johnson of Dexter, Kan., Doris Ball of Arkansas City, Kan., Lucille Doolittle of Norwich, Kan., and Harriett Thompson and her husband, Lee, of Azle, Texas; brothers-in-law, Les Jones and his wife, Celia, of Dayton, Ohio, and Gilmer Nellis of Coffeyville, Kan.; sisters-in-law, Lula (Reed) Cepel and her husband, Harold, of Gibbon, Virginia McCoskey and her husband, Robert, of Wichita, Kan., and Ruth Jones of Simpsonville, S.C.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He grew up in southeast Kansas and received his education in Dexter.
He and his wife lived in Elm Creek, Neodesha, Kan., and Loomis, where he was employed by W.J. Small, ADM & Consolidated Blenders alfalfa dehydrators. Later,
Penn Life Insurance employed him.
He was a member of First Christian Church in Elm Creek, where he served as a deacon, elder, board member and Sunday school superintendent; Kearney Elks Lodge; and the Parkinson's Support Group of Kearney. He was a retired member of the Elm Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
He served many years on school boards in Elm Creek and Loomis. In Loomis, he was on the village board and served as mayor. He loved being with family and friends and especially loved to be with and at events of his grandchildren.
He enjoyed camping and traveling and had been to all 50 states, Canada and old Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Marissa Marie Tropp; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Riggs; sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Paul Kincheloe; sisters-in-law, Peggy Nellis and Gladys Jones; and brothers-in-laws, Lee Johnson, Johnny Doolittle, Walter Ball, Virgil Reed, Elmer Jones and Melvin Williams.
