Obituary for Shirley Miller Drummond (NAUGLE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES):
Shirley Frances Miller Case Drummond, a loving and supportive wife and mother, was born May 24, 1923 in Washington, D.C. and went home to be with the Lord on September 13, 2018. Preceded in death by her ex-husband, Theodore E. Case; her husband, Douglas J. Drummond; and her daughter, Cheryl Ann Case Gannett (Paul); she is survived by her sons Melvin E. Case (Hilda), and Benjamin R. Case (Angela), and step-sons Carl H. Drummond (Mary Jane), and Brian J. Drummond (Ellen), and her step-daughter Laura D. Megill (Douglas). She has 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Shirley grew up in the Petworth section of Washington, DC, and was a 1940 graduate of Roosevelt High School. She was stricken with Polio at age 21 and spent many months recovering in the hospital in an iron lung and going through rehabilitative therapy to regain her mobility before starting her family. In her early career, Shirley worked for Montgomery County, Maryland Parks and Planning Commission and held evening sales meetings for neighbors and friends for Stanley Home Products. Her career moved to Capitol Hill where she served on the staff of U.S. Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon, U.S. Congressman Joseph Karth of Minnesota, and as executive secretary and office manager for U.S. Congressman William Natcher of Kentucky. One of her most noteworthy achievements was attending night school for 12 years while working full time on Capitol Hill and raising her family. She completed her undergraduate degree in English from American University at age 50. She retired from Congressman Natcher's office in 1977. During retirement she and her husband moved to "Strawberry Strip" near Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, where she enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting, and hosting friends and family in the beautiful mountains. Shirley and Doug then moved to Flagler Beach, Florida to delight in life near the ocean. She was active in many civic organizations and a member of Flagler Beach United Methodist Church. Shirley will be remembered for her hard work and her positive mental attitude. Her legacy is her steadfast love and support for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as a caring wife and wonderful mother. A private service for family to celebrate Shirley's life will be held on October 27th. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Cheryl Ann Case Gannett Memorial Endowment at Daytona State College, 1200 West International Speedway Boulevard, Daytona Beach, FL 32114.
