William Lloyd Maness of Plano, Texas passed away peacefully at Plano Presbyterian Hospital on Friday December 12, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was 91. "Bill" was born on July 15, 1923 in Paris, Texas to parents Theron Thurman and Willie Mae (Shannon) Maness. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Molly and Tony Acosta and grandchildren Kelsey and Tony Acosta all of Frisco, Texas and a loving niece and two nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Theron Thurman Maness Jr., and mother of Molly, Ruth Horne Maness. "Bill" grew up in Paris, Texas where he enjoyed many fond memories of his grandparents, William Franklin and Millie Areta (Pledger) Shannon who were a big part of his life as a child and young man. He was forever grateful for their loving role in helping to raise him and his brother during the depression. As a teen, Bill took great pride in his dress and appearance and would save up for the latest fashions that he had heard of in the big cities. On several occasions, his mom pinched pennies to buy him something special to wear that he had seen in a store window in town. Upon hearing the news of Pearl Harbor, Bill enlisted in the Air Force on December 11, 1941 at the age of 18. He served in WWII in the Pacific under General MacArthur where he flew 59 missions. After completing his service, he returned to Paris, Texas attended college and later married Ruth Horne on March 26, 1956. On December 11, 1958 they had their only child, Molly Kathleen. By this time, Bill had a budding career in town working in ladies retail. Always dressed to the nines he was noticed by Dallas executives and before long he headed to Dallas with his family to pursue his interest in fashion. He worked as a salesman for various manufacturers and later joined the Apparel Mart in Dallas where for over 20 years he traveled throughout the United States and to Europe, selling and promoting the latest in fashion trends in ladies ready to wear. As the real estate market began to boom in the 1980's Bill enjoyed a career in home sales working for a custom builder and helping families with the dream of homeownership. Although he loved the city, his passion for the outdoors would lead him to live the life he was eventually destined to live. He moved to Terrell, Texas where he owned land and a farmhouse and learned the comfort of a good pair of blue jeans. For over 15 years he enjoyed every moment of being in the country, raising horses and caring for all animals that crossed his path. Most recently he was a resident of Plano, Texas moving closer to enjoy his grandchildren. He attended every event and holiday he could to be near his family. His faith in God, sense of humor and "always ready for fun" attitude kept him young and his many words of advice and quotes on positive thinking will never be forgotten. He was a member of the VFW and a mason for the last 60 years. The memorial services for William Maness will be held at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano, Texas on January 9th 2015 at 11:00 AM with a reception in the parlour. A military ceremony will follow at Restland Funeral Home at 2:30 PM. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75243. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Operation Kindness-no kill animal shelter or St. Andrew United Methodist Church.
