William Goforth Armstrong was the eldest son of William Goforth Armstrong and his second wife, Margaret Helmer Howard. He married Lillie A. Totten in January, 1891 at the age of 20 years old. They had an eight-month daughter at the time of his death.
He worked as a stenographer for local law offices. He also studied law and had recently completed his studies in the Louisville law school.
