CAPTAIN VON SCHOELER DIES Sailed to United States From Germany During His Youth in N. O. Morning Tribune Captain Victor von Schoeler, who sailed before the mast to this country from Germany in his youth, and rose to prominence in shipping circles in New Orleans, died at the Marine hospital yesterday after a long illness. No one knew his exact age, as he was always reticent about it, but it was estimated by friends at between 83 and 89. He was said to have been descended from German nobility, and a cousin of former Kaiser Wilhelm. His father, he said, was an intimate friend of Bismark's. He began his career in America as a river man in the Teche country and built up a prosperous barge business. Later this developed into a coal-barge business between New Orleans and Pittsburgh, and during his lifetime he owned many steamships. He was at one time head of the Interstate Transportation Company of New Orleans. He married Miss Jane Torras, of Torras, Louisiana, whose people owned one of the largest plantations in the vicinity. Two sons, Valdemar von Schoeler, El Paso, and Victor, jr., Los Angeles, and a nephew by marriage, N. P. Phillips, New Orleans attorney, are his only survivors. Although he built up a considerable fortune during his life, he died practically a pauper, as he had been retired from active business for 15 or 20 years, and unsuccessful investments took all his capital. The captain suffered a stroke of apoplexy last February and had been in the Marine hospital since that time, in a partially paralyzed condition. The body will be accompanied by Mr. Crozat and Paul Jahncke to Franklin, Louisiana, today, where Masonic rites will be held. Interment will be in Franklin. Transcription by Mary Cummins.

His parents were Theodor Alexander Viktor Ernst von Schoeler
1807 - 1894 and Mathild Ottilie Hermine Börger 1828 - 1895. One of his brothers was Waldemar Joachim Alexander von Schoeler 1858 - 1945. He was in the Germany military and deserted in 1871 to New Orleans, Louisiana where he spent the rest of his life. His barges transported cotton and other plantation products.
