George B. "Bert" Ives, president of the F. B. Ives company, died this morning at 6:30 o'clock at his home, 65 Grove street. He had been ill for about four weeks, his demise being due to a general breakdown.
Mr. Ives was born In Oshkosh, May 23, 1873. He grew up In this city and took an early Interest In the grocery business, being employed by and associated with his father, A. W. Ives, one of the pioneers In that line of business. He became associated with the F. B. Ives company as a young man and went to Fond du Lac where he managed the branch wholesale office there.
SERVED AS ALDERMAN He was a resident of Fond du Lac for about 15 or 18 years and during that time he served as alderman in the Fond du Lac council and also was a member of the board of education. He returned to Oshkosh 21 years ago and since that time had continued with the firm in this city in various capacities.
Mr. Ives was a member of the Elks lodge at Fond du Lac and had continued his membership in that order. He had not been active in other fraternal organizations, but for many years had been an ardent sportsman, particularly enjoying deer hunting and fishing. He went to the northern part of the state on deer hunting trips with a group of Fond du Lac men practically every year.
WAS STATE CHAMPION Another sport he enjoyed and one in which he excelled was that of pocket billiards. Adept at the game he teamed with Harry G. Gould, of this city to win the doubles championship in pool for the state of Wisconsin some 25 or 30 years ago. The championship was won from a strong Milwaukee team in a series of matches.
Mr. Ives narrowly escaped death while a young man, when he was in a railroad wreck near De Pere. A Saengerfest excursion train en-route to Green Bay was wrecked and three Oshkosh men Mr. Ives and Eugene Carr and Willard Carr were badly Injured.
Mr. Ives was married to Miss Alma Muenter at Fond du Lac, Nov. 20, 1901. His wife survives him. Other survivors are a daughter, Miss Vera Ives of Oshkosh; two sons, Carl and Lawrence Ives, Oshkosh; and one brother, A. C. Ives, also of this city.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Spikes & McDonald funeral home. The Rev. L. P. Peake, Fond du Lac, will officiate.
