US Senator. He served in the United States Senate from the state of Illinois from November 17, 1970 to January 3, 1981. He was the son of Illinois Governor and two-time Democratic Party nominee Adlai Stevenson II. He received both his AB and LLB degrees from Harvard University. During the Korean War, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Korea. He was discharged in 1954, but continued to serve in the Marine Reserves until 1961, when he was discharged as a captain. From 1957 to 1958, he worked as a clerk for a justice on the Illinois Supreme Court and later went into work with the law firm of Brown and Pratt. In 1964, he was elected to an at large seat in the Illinois State House of Representatives and served in this legislative body for a year. He later served as the Treasurer of Illinois from 1967 to 1970. In 1970, he decided to run, as a Democrat, in the special election to fill the unexpired term of the late Senator Everett M. Dirksen in the United States Senate. He was successful in the November general election and went on to serve in the Senate until 1981, when he stepped down. After leaving the Senate, he made two unsuccessful runs for the governorship of Illinois in both 1982 and 1986. Also he continued to be active in both the political and business arenas for the remainder of his life.
