Evelyn was born in Pegram, ID on August 29, 1928 to Ernest Nelson and Rhoda Bigelow Nelson. She was best friends with her brother, Richard Nelson. She adored her parents and brother. She loved living in Pegram and had many fond memories of her childhood. Her mother passed when Evelyn was only eleven years old. The loss of her mother had a tremendous impact upon her life, but as with every trial she faced, she tried to have a positive attitude. Evelyn moved with her father and brother to Union when she was thirteen years old and lived with her Aunt Gertrude Stradley. Aunt Gertrude showed her tremendous love and kindness. Evelyn felt great love and gratitude for her dear aunt. She made wonderful, lifelong friends while attending school. She graduated from Jordan High School in 1947. When she was a teenager, she met a very handsome young man, Vardis M. Cook. They courted, fell in love and after his service in the U.S. military, were married on June 4, 1947, in the Salt Lake Temple. He was the love of her life, as she was his. She missed him so much in the eleven years since his death, but knew that she would be with him again, for eternity.
Our mother was an angel here on earth. She was always serving someone, whether it be her family, friends or even strangers. She loved taking care of us. Her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her priority. Mom loved to work and worked every day of her life. In the last few years, she would say upon rising in the morning, "What job should I do today?" She was never content to just sit. She would be weeding her garden, picking vegetables or fruit, cleaning her house or cooking. She raised seven children, which in and of itself is a ton of work, Kent (Debbie), Richard (Sherilyn), Jeanine Evans (John), Debra Buchanan (Lyle), Ralph (Kim), Nancy Dolle (Pete), and Tonya Neilson (Brad).
Mom loved the gospel of Jesus Christ. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Along with her husband, Vardis, she served a proselyting mission for the church in Big Bear, CA. She served in numerous church callings throughout her life. At the age of 81, she was serving as a Primary teacher, along with her husband, before his passing. Her example of living a righteous life is a legacy to her family. She was a true example of a follower of Christ. She was loved by so many, especially her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren loved to call her "Grandma Cookie."
Evelyn is preceded in death by her father, Ernest Nelson, mother, Rhoda Nelson, and brother, Richard Nelson, sister-in-law, Lois Nelson Bouck, her husband, Vardis, daughters, Janette Cook, Lynne Cook, and Nancy Dolle, grandsons Ryan Cook, and Scott Cook and daughter-in-law Karen Cook.
