James E. Carpenter - 7/30/1925 to 8/22/2021

Veteran James E. Carpenter went home to our Lord and Savior August 22, 2021. Jim was born in Cedar, Minnesota and raised in St. Cloud and St. Paul. As a young 17 year-old (1943), he joined the Navy, serving on the USS Bataan (CVL-29) in the South Pacific in the battle of the Philippine Sea for 3 years. He joined Navy Reserves after WW2. He attended college in St. Cloud, met and married his wife Cleo (Benit) in 1955. He was holding a job with the Boy Scouts when he decided to re-enlist in the Army National Guard and has two honorable discharges for his service in the Army, and two for his time in the Navy. He thrived holding several positions in public service throughout his life. He was Mayor of Osakis, MN, a part time paramedic and reserve police officer, and full time building inspector for several municipalities in Illinois in the 1980's. He was active in his church all his life. He also volunteered in the Kiwanis Club and Lions Club serving countless hours. Most recently he was a member of the VFW Post 12043 in Maricopa, Arizona. The Carpenters raised 4 children and they celebrated 66 years of marriage in 2021. Proceeding him in death, is son, Dana Carpenter, and sister. Jean Houtz. Survived by his wife, Cleo (Benit) Carpenter, his daughter, Debra Carpenter of Arizona, son, David Carpenter (Roberta) of Tennessee, and daughter, Diane Gioia (Dan) of Illinois. Jim will be remembered for his big heart and love of his family, his church and his country.
