Mr Briggs, an ardent student of local marine history, was born in New Bedford May 1, 1878, son of James Cannon and Mary Jane (Reynold) Briggs. His father sailed several voyages before entering the marine chandlery business here, in the firm which became Briggs and Beckman and subsequently C E Beckman Company.
Graduated from New Bedford High School in 1897 as valedictorian of his class, and from Harvard in 1901. Mr Briggs entered his father's business on leaving college. During his student days, he spent summers in Havana, improving his knowledge of Spanish and teaching English.
Mr Briggs was a member of the finance committee of the Old Dartmouth and had been a board member for perhaps 10 years. He was also a board member of the New Bedford Port Society and a member and former officer of the United Church and a trustee of the New Bedford Institution of Savings.
Survivors are his widow, Mrs Inez Louise (Nash) Briggs; a son, Robert A of Dover; a daughter, Mrs Jane Fowles of Windsor, Conn; six grandchildren and three brothers; Zenas M of Los Angeles CA. Robert E of Newton Highlands, and Walter S of Needham.
