Betty Hutchison Chisholm
November 3, 1935 - August 31, 2021
Columbia, South Carolina - Mrs. Betty Jarvis Hutchison Chisholm of Columbia, South Carolina, and formerly of Rock Hill, South Carolina, was welcomed into eternal rest and peace with our Lord on Tuesday August 31, 2021. Betty was the youngest of the two daughters born to the late Fred Lee Hutchison and the late Alfreda Cunningham in Lancaster, South Carolina. She attended elementary and high school in Lancaster County and was a member and proud alumnae of the first graduating class of the newly-named "Barr Street High School".
Betty as a girl and young woman was nurtured by her family in the Christian faith. She was baptized at Frazier AME Zion Church in Lancaster and later joined New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church in Rock Hill as a young woman and mother. She was a faithful member having served on numerous committees, the Layman's Council, and was a class leader. Following in her mother Alfreda's footsteps, Betty was a talented vocalist who loved singing and enjoyed gospel music. She shared her love and her gift of voice as a member of the church's Adult Choir, and was also a charter member of the Rock Hill Eumentical Chorale. While residing in Columbia, Betty joined the Jones Memorial A M E Zion Church where she once again resumed active church service and was consecrated as a Deaconess in 2016.
On August 14, 1957, Betty married her husband of 54 years, the late Francis Ruben Chisholm. Together Betty and Francis made a pleasant home in Rock Hill at the Chisholm Family residence on Dave Lyle Boulevard, and there raised two sons: Alfred Ruben Chisholm and the late Franklin Marcellus Chisholm. Betty was a wonderful homemaker and served up hospitality very well. She was employed by Springs Industries in Fort Mill, SC and later retired from Duke Energy in 1997. With advancing age and a desire to be closer to family, Betty and Francis made the difficult decision to relocate to Columbia in June 2008 and made their new home together there. In addition to her parents, her husband and youngest son, she is also predeceased by her sister, Mrs. Gladys Eugenie Pellam.
At the heart of Betty Chisholm's life was her loving family whom she was tremendously proud and loved deeply. Betty leaves behind in this life her son Alfred Chisholm, daughter-in-law Blanche M. Glover Chisholm of Columbia, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Dr. Phillip R. (Dr. Smith Ann) Chisholm of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Emery (Caroline) M. Alexander Chisholm of Fort Mill, South Carolina; and Blanche S. Christina Chisholm of Arlington, Virginia; two great-grandchildren Xavi Glover Chisholm of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Adelaide English Chisholm of Fort Mill, South Carolina; beloved niece Rev Devia P. (Isaiah) Phinisee of Irmo, South Carolina; beloved grand-niece Jarvin (Arthur) Eugenie Barnes of Dallas, Texas; beloved great-grand niece Zahrah Shabazz of Dallas, Texas.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family requests that you do not visit the residence. Condolences may be sent to the family at 206 Clearview Drive, Columbia, SC 29212 or to the Robinson Funeral Home P.O. Box 11565, Rock Hill, South Carolina 29731.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the building fund of the New Mt. Olivet AME Zion Church or to the Jones Memorial AME Zion Church Ministry of Kindness Fund.
