Mrs. Mary Newton, widow of Andrew Newton, was born in Kentucky in 1827, the daughter of William and Huldah (Young) Rippey, natives of Virginia. They were married in Kentucky, and afterward moved to Indiana, when the subject of this sketch was a child. The father was a farmer by occupation, and died in Indiana, where the mother also passed the remainder of her days. The paternal grandfather died in Wright County, MO, and the maternal grandfather died in Kentucky. Mrs. Newton was left an orphan at an early age, and was reared by an aunt, who took her to MO, and settled in Wright County. Here she grew to womanhood, and was married to Mr. Newton in 1843. To them were born fifteen children, ten now living: James, William, Sarah, wife of Thomas Montgomery; John, Frances E. wife of William W. Edington; George W., Mary, wife of Rufus Scott; Julia A., wife of C. J. Crain; Jesse A. and Barney. Those deceased are: Rettie, who died at the age of eleven years and five months; Huldah, who died at the age of nineteen months; Clementine, Susan, who died at the age of four months, and an infant son. Andrew Newton was born in Kentucky in 1819, and died February 27, 1881, at the age of sixty-two years. He was reared in Indiana, and came to MO in 1839, where he homesteaded 400 acres, which is still in the hands of the family. George, Jesse and Barney are at home.

Mrs. Mary (Rippee) Newton, affectionately known to a very wide circle of devoted friends as Aunt Polly Newton, passed away after a brief illness of pneumonia at her home near Odin, Missouri, at the hour of 1 o'clock a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 1906; aged 79 years, 9 months and 5 days. The funeral service was held at the home by Rev. Thos. Todd on Wednesday at 11 o'clock in the forenoon, and Aunt Polly Newotn was laid to rest by loving hands, in the lower Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Newton was born Feb. 8, 1827, in Brown County, Indiana, and in the Fall of 1839 moved to Wright County, Mo. where she has since continuously resided. In 1843 she was marrried to Andrew Newton, with whom she lived happily until his death. To this union were born 15 children, nine of whom are living--James, Wm. C., John, Geo. W. and Jesse A. Newton, Sarah J. Montgomery, Fannie Edington, Mary Scott and Julia A. Crain. Six children went ahead of the mother to the Home Above--Hulda, Susanah, Clementine, and Infant Son, Rettie and Barney.
