Albert Jans (sometimes Albertus Jans) Aukes was ordained Priest on 31 January 1869. At the time, he had already been working as a secretary of the Archdiocese of Utrecht for a year. After his ordination, he kept working at the Archdiocese until 1881. In 1881, Aukes became Pastoor (Pastor/Parish Priest) in Cothen, Utrecht. He remained here until 1889, when he became Pastoor of the H.H. Bonifacius en Gezellen (Holy Boniface and Companions) Parish and Deken (Dean) of Leeuwarden, succeeding Deken-Pastoor Menting. He remained in this position until his death in 1910. Mgr. Aukes was known as a great musician and meant a lot for the church music in Leeuwarden. Among other things, he founded the choir of the Parish. In 1905, Queen Wilhelmina made Aukes a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. In 1909, when Aukes was a Priest for 40 years, Pope Pius X made him a Papal Chamberlain, which meant he could use the prefix Mgr., meaning Monsignor. When Mgr. Aukes died in 1910, he was succeeded by Mgr. Vaas as Deken of Leeuwarden.
