William H. Burkhalter, president of the Dayton bank, and one of the most substantial men of Sheffield township, died at St Elizabeth hospital at 6:15 o'clock last night, following a stroke of paralysis which occurred April 22. Mr Burkhalter was born in Clinton county, September 6, 1847, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Burkhalter. He received a good common school education, and then engaged in farming, which occupation he followed until he enlisted in the Tenth Indiana Volunteer Battery for service in the civil war, December 11, 1863, for the duration of the war. He participated in the battles of Kennesaw mountain, Resaca, Buzzard Roost, and Sand Mountain, and also took part in Cooks raid, his battery being for a time stationed in Atlanta. At the close of the war he received an honorable discharge at Indianapolis, and then returned home and took up the occupation of farming, managing the family homestead in Clinton county for four year. He then came to this county and settled in Sheffield township, where he lived until 1909, since which time he has lived at Dayton. On March 27, 1866, he married to Polly Rhoads, of Lehigh county, Pa., who died September 27, 1870. After her death he was married to Sovilla Idle, of Northampton county, PA., to which union one daughter was born, now Mrs. Jackson Brady, of Dayton. After the death of his second wife, he married her sister, Mary Idle, who died about two years ago. To this union six children were born all of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Sovilla Allen Smith, of St Louis, Mrs. Otto Hinkle, of Elston; Jerome, of Perry township; Mrs Lyda Thanapauer, and Miss Mary Burkhalter, of this city, and Mrs. Morrette Taylor, of Rossville. In Politics Mr. Burkhalter was a republican and was formerly trustee of Sheffield township. In 1900 he was elected to the office of county commissioner, which office he held for six years. He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Dayton, and a member of Elliott Post GAR. He was also a member of the German Reformed church, at Oxford, and was a conscientious and zealous worker in church matters. The body was taken to Dayton, where burial will be made. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
