A son of Lewis and Mary Agassiz, Arthur's Swiss-born father had been made a British citizen in 1766 by a private act of Parliament (7 George III c.4). Three years later, he launched the merchant house of Lewis Agassiz & Co., trading in sugar, coffee, and cocoa. When his father retired in 1784, Arthur took over the business which by then had expanded its interests around the globe.

In 1823 Arthur dissolved the company (by then trading as Agassiz & Son), and by 01 Aug 1826 is known to have moved his family to 10 Calle de las Cappuchinas in Mexico City.

On or shortly after 29 Dec 1796 Arthur married Susanna Rouviere. They are known to have been the parents of at least ten children, a number of whom were born at the family's last London residence, No. 15 Finsbury Square.

By the date of the 1841 census, Arthur and his family had returned to England and were enumerated in the household of their daughter Mrs. Mary Ann Edlmann at Peckham in Surrey.

The Edlmann's next moved to 'Bickley House' in Bromley, where Arthur's daughter Mary Ann died in 1850. Arthur and daughter Emma continued to reside there with his now-widowed son-in-law, Joseph Frederic Maria Edlemann, and were enumerated there on the 1851 census.

Six years later his son-in-law died. Arthur and Emma Agassiz next resided with his grandson, Joseph's son Frederic J. Edlemann, who had purchased the estate of Hawkwood in Chislehurst (then in the county of Kent).

Arthur's death was reported on page 4 of London's Pall Mall Gazette of 08 May 1866 which related that he had died at Hawkwood.
